Strategies for Conflict Management

This is the foirth sessions on interpersonal skills builds on the content of the previous sessions, especially supportive communication and power and influence. The session focuses on identifying the causes of conflict, considering personal preferences and contextual characteristics when selecting the appropriate conflict management strategy, and using the collaborative approach to resolving interpersonal confrontations.  Conflict management requires both effective analytical and behavioural skills. Identifying causes and alternative responses are analytical steps, whereas effectively implementing a plan requires behavioural skills.  An important fact to stress is that all elements in the model are necessary and will aid in resolving conflicts when both parties follow the guidelines.
Even when the other party is not very cooperative, the guidelines for a given role, coupled with the discussion of assertiveness in the power session, still represent the best strategy for negotiating an acceptable outcome.
